Control module solutions may be more efficient than function block solutions,particularly if complex applications with deep hierarchical structures are to be used.This is in particularly true for parameters of structured type, which are distributed asIn and/or Out parameters. Function block parameters are copied at each call, whilecontrol module parameters are set up once during compilation.

Suppose we have the same code in a function block and in a control module, andthat the blocks do not have any parameters. In this case, the function block willexecute faster than the control module, since control modules have an extraoverhead of 4-5 microseconds for each code block (in PM860), function blocks donot have this overhead. The memory requirement will be the same for both.

Function block parameters are copied at each call, which means that the CPU willspend considerable time passing parameter values to and from function blocks, ifthere are deep structures in the program. The parameter connections of a controlmodule, on the other hand, are defined prior to compilation. This gives superiorperformance using control modules when parameters are transferred through deephierarchies.
