Introduction

The ControlLogix system combines the controller, servo module, andprogramming software into a working motion application. You needonly one programming software package to develop sequential andmotion logic.The ControlLogix controller executes the motion functions. Thededicated servo modules perform the position and velocity loopclosure. The ControlLogix backplane feature of coordinated systemtime (CST) synchronizes the controllers and the servo modules andfacilitates passing command and status information. To develop amotion application: Interfacing with communication networks is modular, except for theRS-232 serial (DF1 protocol) port built into the front of theControlLogix controller. Separate communication interface modulesare available for interfacing the backplane with Ethernet, ControlNet,DeviceNet, DH+, and Universal Remote I/O networks. If you placemultiple communication interface modules in a ControlLogixbackplane, you can configure a gateway to bridge and route controland information data between networks.A ControlLogix controller communicates across the backplane with1756 I/O modules in the local chassis. A ControlLogix controller canalso communicate across the backplane with communication interfacemodules to monitor and control I/O on ControlNet, DeviceNet, andthe Universal Remote I/O networks and to monitor FoundationFieldbus data. General communication messages can be sent from orreceived by ControlLogix controllers across Ethernet, ControlNet,DeviceNet, DH+, Universal Remote I/O, and RS-232 serial (DF1protocol) networks.Messages are sent directly from one communication interface moduleto another across the backplane. You can route a message through amaximum of 4 chassis (8 communication hops).
