Vibration transmitters have many limitations whencompared to a continuous vibration monitoringsystem. They are a practical solution in someapplications for measuring general vibration levelsand are a valuable tool for overall vibration trending.However, they provide limited capability formachinery diagnostics using the vibration signal anddo not capture dynamic vibration signals (used fordiagnostics) in the event of a vibration alarm. Whilethe transmitter is capable of peak vibration alarmingand non-OK checking, the 4-20 mA signal cannot beused to determine the phase of vibration, andmonitor functions such as gap alarms, phase alarms,Timed OK channel defeat, Danger Bypass, and TripMultiply cannot be used. In addition, PLCs attachedto the vibration transmitter can only provide peakto-peak trending data and are not suitable for plantwide diagnostic systems such as System 1 or RulePaks.‡ The 990 Vibration Transmitter's "Prox Out" coaxialconnector provides a non-isolated dynamictransducer signal for machinery diagnostics. You canconnect this signal directly to battery-powered orisolated test equipment to diagnose machineryproblems. However, since the "PROX OUT" signal isnot isolated from the 4 to 20 mA loop signal, aninterface is available (and strongly recommended) forsignal isolation. The 990/991 Test Adapter conditionsthe 990 Transmitter's "PROX OUT" signal for use withac-powered test equipment. It also inverts andisolates the 990's transducer signal, making itsuitable for equipment such as oscilloscopes andanalyzers, and preserving industry-standardconventions for signal polarity. We stronglyrecommend the use of this test adapter for allapplications to maintain isolation between testequipment and the loop signal, and ensure that theinstallation maintains machinery protection integrity
