The 3500 System communicates withprocess control and other plantautomation systems using industrystandard protocols via the 3500’sCommunications Gateway module In addition, analog (4 to 20 mA andrelay) outputs are available forconnection to older plant controls thatcannot support digital interfaces.The 3500 System can be configured withvarying levels of redundancy. This rangesfrom simplex modules to dual powersupplies to redundant relay modules withwide ranging and flexible logical operatoroptions for configuring complex relay logicas needed. The 3500 System also offers avariety of Safety Integrity Level (SIL)certifications (SIL 1 and SIL 2) for various3500 monitors used in safetyinstrumented systems subject toFunctional Safety Certification.The 3500 System incorporates numerousself-monitoring functions that can identifyfaults in the monitor modules and theirconnected transducers, annunciate andidentify problems via appropriate errorcodes, and suppress channel operationautomatically when a failure couldcompromise correct operation of thesystem.The 3500 System stores configurationsettings in two separate locations in eachmodule’s non-volatile memory. Thisredundancy allows each module tocompare configuration information foragreement and to flag any anomalies.The use of redundant, non-volatilememory also accommodatesprogramming a spare module ahead oftime. It also ensures that, in the event aredundant power supply is not used,monitor configuration is not lost whenpower is interrupted and monitoringfunctions can resume immediately uponreapplication of rack power.
