To get the maximum flexibility out of the S4 ComputerSystem, the operating software is loaded into RAMmemory. This gives flexibility because different softwareoptions can be supplied simply by loading new systemsoftware.The RAM memory is battery backed by two 3.6 voltlithium batteries. The life expectancy of these batteriesis 5 years. If both of these batteries are disconnectedand the main disconnect is turned off, the computer willloose the information stored in RAM. Or, if one of thecomputer boards (Main, Robot, or Memory) isdisconnected, the system will also lose memory andhave to be reloaded.In this chapter the procedures required to reload thesystem software is explained.
