Overview

With the recent expanding use of field digital technology,there are increasing demands for applying field digitaltechnology not only when building new plants but alsowhen upgrading existing plants. When upgrading plants, theplant shutdown period for migrating control systems mustbe as short as possible to minimize the cost. Therefore, thecontrol systems need to be upgraded while not affectingsignal conditioner nests and field wiring. This restriction hasconventionally made it difficult to upgrade plants that use fielddigital technology.Yokogawa has released I/O modules with HARTcommunication function and signal conditioners (SC) whichallow both the use of field digital technology and migration atminimum cost.

1) When upgrading systems, field digital technology (HARTcommunication) can be introduced by replacing only I/Omodules, SCs, and field devices, leaving signal conditionernests and field wiring unchanged.

2) Phased migration is possible: replacing a control system(I/O modules) first, and SCs and field devices next.

3) Introduction of the Plant Resource Manager (PRM)enables operation and maintenance utilizing field digitaltechnology
